China’s new driver-assistance standard: does it reach a BYD in Europe?

On 27 June 2026 China approved a mandatory national standard for combined driving assistance, GB 47955-2026, and MIIT says it takes effect on 1 January 2027. It sets requirements for how the system behaves, how it talks to the driver, what it records, and how it is tested.

It does not apply to my car. It is a Chinese national standard with an effective date in 2027, and my Han was built five years ago and now lives in Portugal, so as I read it nothing here reaches the car sitting outside. MIIT gives the date and says nothing about vehicles already abroad, so that reading is mine, not theirs.

I still think it is worth an hour of any Chinese-car owner’s attention in Europe, because of one paragraph near the end where MIIT compares its own standard to the UN regulation that Europe runs on.


What the standard actually covers

MIIT describes combined driving assistance as a system that helps with steering and with speed under defined operating conditions, while the driver keeps watching the traffic and stays in control of the car. That definition is doing real work. It is not autonomy, and the standard is written from the position that it is not autonomy.

According to the announcement, the standard splits products into three classes — basic single-lane, basic multi-lane, and navigation-assisted driving — and sets separate requirements for each. It covers functional requirements, data recording, and the manufacturer’s own safety assurance. It also covers human-machine interaction, the user manual, and user training, which MIIT frames as making sure the driver and the system cooperate correctly.

Assessment is layered: track testing, road testing, and document inspection.

MIIT also gives two numbers for context. In 2026, 70% of new passenger cars sold in China carry some form of combined driving assistance, and more than 30% carry navigation-assisted driving.

That is not a feature any more, that is the default trim level.


Why UN R171 shows up in a Chinese ministry announcement

MIIT notes that the UN forum WP.29 published UN R171 for driver control assistance systems in March 2024 and completed its first revision in March 2025. It then states that, compared with UN R171, the Chinese standard sets more detailed technical requirements on the system’s design operating range, on functional requirements, on driver state monitoring and on informing the user, and adds track test scenarios with their pass conditions.

UN R171 is the one that reaches Europe. That is the regulation a car sold here is measured against.

The useful thing here is not that China is getting stricter. It is that the rules follow the market a car was built for and the date it was built, rather than the badge on it. A manufacturer builds to whatever applies where the car is sold, so a Chinese-market car does not carry the Chinese standard with it once it is somewhere else. If you are looking at importing one on the assumption that the home market gets the better-regulated version, that is a question about dates and markets, and it needs answering that way.

Every claim in that table is MIIT’s own, from the announcement linked at the bottom. I have not read the standard itself, and I am not going to pretend otherwise.


Does any of this help the car I actually own?

No.

Nearly six years, 60,000 km, bought new in China and brought to Portugal. During one wet season the assistance features on this car stopped being reliable in a way that tracked the weather rather than the mileage. Cruise control stopped working. The car reported a door that was shut. And once the system decided I was pressing the brake and the accelerator at the same time.

I filmed that last one on 12 June 2025. The warning is readable on the dash at 47 km/h, while the power meter is showing 31 kW going back into the battery — which is to say the car’s own instrument was contradicting the car’s own message, on the same screen, at the same moment.

Now put that next to a standard whose headline features are driver state monitoring and user training.

A system that cannot tell whether a door is shut is not going to be rescued by better requirements on how it informs me. The failure was not at the interface. It was further down, in whether the inputs meant anything at all. No standard written for cars built after 2027 does anything about that, and I do not think MIIT would claim otherwise.


So what is it good for

Two honest things.

If you are buying, this is a date to know. Cars built for China from January 2027 will be certified against something specific, and you can ask which classification a model was certified in — basic single-lane, basic multi-lane, or navigation-assisted. That is a much better question than asking whether a car “has autopilot”.

If you already own one, it is a reminder of the boundary. Both the Chinese standard and UN R171 are written about assistance with a driver in the loop. Both of them assume you are watching. Mine is a 2020 car, so neither applies to it, and the assumption is still the correct one to drive by.

I do genuinely like how this car drives. Quiet, smooth, quick off the line, surprisingly comfortable — that has not changed in nearly six years and it is why I am still here writing about it rather than having sold it. But I have learned to treat its assistance features as a convenience that might not be available today, in the same way I treat the weather. 🙂
