BYD 12V battery flat? Do not jump start it

If the 12V battery in your BYD has gone flat, the battery is probably fine. Four things are worth knowing before anyone starts quoting you for a new one. There is no alternator in this car, so it does not charge while you drive. After a deep discharge it tops the 12V up from the main traction battery, and only while the car is parked. You should not jump start it with a booster pack. And you cannot simply fit a different 12V battery that physically fits, because this one is a protected unit that talks to the car.

I learned all of this over five years and 50,000 km with a Han in Portugal, and every bit of it came from other owners rather than from a service centre. Which turns out to be the real lesson, and I come back to it at the end.


How mine went flat

Mine did not go flat from old age. It went flat because the car spent twenty six days in a workshop having a rear door handle replaced, with a significant part of the interior taken apart and put back together. When I collected the car, the 12V was dead enough that the car could not start or be driven.

That evening I put the car on charge and it shut down. I was a long way from home, phoning round anyone who might be able to help. That is the situation this post is really about: not a battery that wore out, but a car that will not wake up and nobody in the building being sure why.


Four things that are not obvious

There is no alternator, so driving does not charge the 12V

This is the one that catches people, including professionals. On a petrol or diesel car, a flat 12V battery is often solved by running the engine. An electric car has no alternator. The 12V system is fed from the main traction battery through a converter, on the car’s own terms.

So driving a BYD around to charge its 12V battery does not work. It is not a slow fix or an inefficient fix. It is not a fix.

Do not jump start it with a booster pack

Based on the manufacturer’s instructions as I understand them, using an external jump starter on this car is not permitted. I would treat that as a hard rule rather than a suggestion. A protected battery and a car full of electronics is not the place to improvise with an unregulated power source.

If someone reaches for a booster pack on your BYD, that is the moment to ask them to stop and check the manual.

After a deep discharge it only charges while parked

Once the 12V has gone properly flat, the car will replenish it from the main battery, but in my experience only while the car is stationary. Not while driving, not while you are waiting to set off. Parked.

Which means the fix takes patience rather than movement. Leave it alone and let the car do its thing.

You cannot just fit a different 12V battery

This is the part almost nobody mentions. The 12V unit in this car is not a plain lead acid box you can swap for whatever has the right terminals and fits the tray.

It is a lithium module with its own controller, and it talks to the car over a bus. So a generic replacement is not a drop-in job, even when the dimensions match. It also means a battery that appears dead may simply have protected itself, which is a very different thing from a battery that has failed.

You do not need a wiring diagram to confirm this, incidentally. Look at the unit. A conventional 12V battery has two terminals and nothing else. This one is a sealed module of about four and a half kilos, marked as a BYD lithium battery, with two power terminals and a separate multi pin connector. That connector is not there for decoration. It is how the battery reports to the car.

This matters commercially. “Your battery is dead, here is the price of a new one” is an easy conclusion to reach and an expensive one to accept. The unit is designed to last the service life of the car.

The driver’s door button

Here is the part that other owners taught me, and which resolved it.

Press and hold the button on the driver’s door handle. Not a quick press, hold it. That prompts the car to start charging the 12V from the main traction battery. That is what brought mine back. No new battery, no booster pack, no driving in circles.

I want to be straight about the status of that information. It came from members of a BYD owners’ group, it worked on my car, and I passed it to my service centre in writing because they did not have it. It is owner experience, not a manufacturer procedure I can quote you chapter and verse on. My car is a Han of a particular age and specification, and I would not assume the same button behaves the same way on every BYD model and model year. Check your own manual first.

How long each party took

I want to put two timelines next to each other, because I think they say more than anything else in this post.

I collected the car on 20 September 2025, after twenty six days in the workshop, and it shut down that evening when I put it on charge. I wrote to the service manager the same night.

On 22 September I described the problem in a group of BYD owners. The answer arrived in the same minute I asked. Press and hold the button on the door handle. A follow up two minutes later confirmed it: press it, it will charge.

On 23 September the car went back to the service centre, and they spent about another two weeks on it, having been told in writing what the fix was.

One minute against about two weeks. That is not a criticism of any individual. It is what the difference between a network of owners and a service network that has not met the car looks like when you measure it.

There is an irony to this, which I will come back to at the end: the button that does this on my car no longer works.


What to do if yours is flat right now

In the order I would do it.

  1. Stop anyone from connecting a booster pack.
  2. Park the car and leave it parked. Do not try to drive it to charge the 12V.
  3. Try the driver’s door button, if your model has one and your manual supports it, to prompt charging from the main battery.
  4. Give it time while stationary.
  5. Before agreeing to a replacement battery, ask for a written explanation of why the battery is considered faulty rather than protected or simply discharged. Ask for it in writing.
  6. Ask an owners’ community. I am not being flippant. On this specific problem, the community knew more than the counter did.

Point five is the one that saves money. “It will not charge” and “it is faulty” are not the same finding, and only one of them justifies buying a battery.

Point six is the one that solved it.


What is actually inside the battery, and why you cannot outsmart it

This section is reference material rather than instructions. Read the warning at the end of it before you touch anything.

The best teardown I have found was published in September 2025 by an owner in Irkutsk, on the Russian car community drive2.ru, working on a BYD Song Plus DM-i rather than a Han. The battery in that car is marked SA3HE-3703040. Treat the specifics as indicative for other BYD models rather than confirmed: part numbers and layouts differ, and I have not opened mine. What is in there. Not a battery in the sense most people mean. A sealed module containing a controller board and a block of four lithium cells.

What the controller does. It monitors the voltage and current of every individual cell, around the clock. If one cell sags, it tries to charge that cell on its own. It reports to the car over the CAN bus, and the car periodically asks it for a battery diagnosis after start up. If the answer is good, you drive. If the answer is bad, the car stops and cuts the electrics. One faulty cell out of four is enough to immobilise the whole vehicle.

That last sentence explains something that otherwise makes no sense: how a car with a large traction battery in perfectly good health can be completely dead because of one small cell.

How it comes apart, in three stages, per that teardown:

  1. Remove the plugs on the rear face and undo the retaining bolts.
  2. The control connector is sealed with sealant. It has to be cut carefully with a scalpel or similar precision blade to release the cover. Underneath is the controller board.
  3. Extract the internal cell block, four cells. That is the module fully apart. Reassembly is the reverse.

In his case two of the four cells were swollen, so he had to open the cell block itself.

The experiments that did not work

This is the useful part, and it is all negative results. He tried, out of curiosity, to get the car moving without correct cells:

His conclusion, and I would take it at face value: you cannot fool this system with jumper clips and improvisation. The lockout lifts only when the cells present are the correct ones, with parameters the controller recognises.

The distinction that matters: repair is not bypass

Read that conclusion carefully, because it contains the useful half.

Every failed experiment was an attempt to trick the controller: a battery bolted on from outside, a controller moved to a different pack, cells from a UPS that happened to match on voltage. None of that works, and no amount of ingenuity is going to make it work.

But “the lockout lifts when the cells are correct” is not a dead end. It is a specification. Replacing the four cells with cells that match the parameters the controller expects is not a bypass at all, it is the repair — you are giving the protection circuit exactly what it is asking for rather than trying to get around it. The controller was never the enemy. It was doing its job, which is refusing to run a car on a bad cell.

That is what makes this worth knowing commercially. If cell-level replacement is viable, then “the module is dead, buy a new module” is a much weaker position than it sounds, because the expensive sealed unit is four cells and a board.

How solid is this? Partly. It follows directly from the teardown author’s own conclusion, and cell-level replacement is something I have seen owners refer to, presumably using cells matched on specification. What I do not have is a documented account with the actual cell specification, a parts source and a confirmed working result on a Han. So treat it as the right question to ask rather than a procedure to follow. If you have done it, I would like to hear from you, and I will update this post.

Before you open anything

I am including this because the information is worth having and because owners keep being told a whole new battery is the only answer. I am not recommending you do it.

Specifically:

  • A swollen lithium cell is a fire and venting risk. The teardown above found two. Swelling means the cell has already failed internally. Puncturing, dropping, shorting or compressing it can vent hot toxic gas or ignite it, and lithium fires are not something a household extinguisher settles.
  • Cutting sealant with a blade sits millimetres from live cells and a controller board. A slip is a short.
  • There is no protection once the protection is out of circuit. The controller is the thing stopping a bad cell from being charged. Removing it from the equation removes the only supervision the pack has.
  • Do it outdoors or somewhere you would be content to have a fire, never in an attached garage, never near anything you care about, never unattended while charging.
  • It voids what remains of any warranty, and if the car’s electrical system is already the subject of a complaint, opening the battery yourself will be the first thing anyone points at.

If you are not equipped to handle a lithium pack, the right move is to use the section above as ammunition in the conversation rather than as a shopping list: ask which specific cell is failing, ask for the diagnostic that says so, and ask why the module rather than the cells.


Why a service centre can get this wrong

I do not think anyone I dealt with was acting in bad faith. I think the knowledge was not there.

Every assumption above is one a good petrol mechanic would carry over automatically. Charge it by running the engine. Jump it with a booster. Swap the battery for one of the right size. All three are correct on the cars they have worked on for twenty years, and all three are wrong here. A brand that arrives in a market quickly, sold through dealers who trained on something else, produces exactly this: competent people applying the wrong model of the car.

Owners in other countries describe the same thing. In Belgium, an owner pointed out that most dealers there had been selling BYD for less than a year, with training, experience and parts all missing. The one genuinely good experience I have heard, from an owner in Japan, came from a dealership whose parent company specialises in imported brands, so its technical centre already knew how to work on unfamiliar cars.

So the pattern is not about the badge on the bonnet. It is about whether the organisation servicing it has met a car like this before.


The part that still bothers me

Two things about my own case sit badly, and neither is about money.

The flat battery was not a fault that arrived on its own. It appeared after work carried out at the service centre. And the proposed resolution was for me to pay for it. A problem produced during a repair became a problem I was invited to solve at my own expense. I do not think that is how it should work, and I said so.

The second thing is the door button. I asked for it to be replaced or repaired in writing, back in September 2025. It has not been replaced.

That on its own would be a small complaint. What makes it worth writing down is that it is the pattern rather than the exception.

A headlight defect once took six months just to get an answer. A rear door handle broken during a repair was still not fixed at the next service. And my most recent visit was booked specifically to replace two things, the damaged filter housing cover and that handle. Neither was replaced. The parts that had been ordered were the wrong ones.

Two parts, one appointment, both wrong. How that happens I genuinely do not know. I only know it happened, and that I drove home with the same two faults I arrived with.

And the practical consequence for this post: the workaround that saved me from an unnecessary battery no longer works on my own car, because the button that performs it is one of the parts that never got replaced.


The one thing I would tell anyone thinking of buying

Not that the cars break. Every car breaks.

Find the owners in your own country and talk to them before you buy.

Everything useful in this post came from other owners. That there is no alternator. That you must not put a booster pack on it. That the 12V charges from the main battery only while parked. That the battery is protected and sits on a bus, so a generic replacement is not a drop-in job. And the door button that actually fixed my car.

None of it came from a dealer. I ended up passing it to my service centre in writing, because they did not have it.

That is the whole argument. A showroom will tell you about range, warranty length and equipment, and none of that is a lie. It is just the cover of the book. What you actually need to know is what happens on the day something small goes wrong: who picks up the phone, whether the parts exist, whether anyone in the building has seen this fault before. A salesperson cannot tell you that. An owner two towns over can, in about ten minutes.

And it has to be local owners, which is the part people skip. The car is the same everywhere. The service is not. An owner in Japan described genuinely excellent service, fast parts and a flawless repair, because that dealership’s parent company already specialised in imported brands. An owner in Belgium described the opposite, with dealers barely a year into selling the brand and training, experience and parts all missing. Same car, opposite ownership experience. Reviews from another market, mine included, will not tell you what your own service network is like.

So: find the local forum, the local Facebook group, the subreddit, the WhatsApp group of owners in your city. Ask them the boring questions. How long did your last repair take. Did the parts arrive. Did they arrive correct. What happened when you brought in something the manual does not cover.

Then decide. I like how my car drives, five years and 50,000 km in, and I would still say the same thing to anyone asking: talk to owners, not to the brochure.
